What happens after: Post? Physical changes

What you can expect in Post-Menopause

Menopause is often talked about as “the change,” but what happens after? For women in their 50s and 60s, life after menopause is a new chapter with its own physical shifts, emotional developments, and liberating perks. This is a time when many women find a comfortable rhythm with their bodies again and discover that there’s plenty of vibrant life to be lived post-menopause. In this article, we’ll explore what life is like after menopause – in terms of health changes and real stories from women who’ve been there.

Physical changes and health after Menopause

Once you’ve gone a full year without a period – the official mark of menopause – you move into Post-Menopause, the stage that lasts for the rest of your life.1 The rollercoaster of hormonal fluctuations begins to level out. In fact, many of those notorious menopause symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings) start to fade once you’re past the transition. However, some mild effects can linger for a few years, and the drop in estrogen brings new health considerations – notably a higher risk of osteoporosis (bone thinning) and heart disease.1 Low estrogen levels after menopause are linked to loss of bone density and changes in cholesterol, which is why doctors advise keeping an eye on your bone and cardiovascular health in these years.2  But there are active prevention strategies you can learn in our app.

Other physical changes are common too. You might notice your metabolism slowing down a bit. Many women find it easier to gain weight or that weight redistributes more to the abdomen in their 50s – partly due to hormonal shifts and the loss of muscle mass that comes with age.3 Skin and hair can become drier or thinner. With less estrogen, vaginal tissues tend to be less lubricated and more delicate, which can lead to vaginal dryness and discomfort during sex, as well as occasional urinary changes (like more frequent infections or irritation).4 These changes are normal, but they may require some adjustments – for example, using vaginal moisturizers or staying extra hydrated – to keep you feeling your best.

Even medical issues like hormone-dependent uterine fibroids often shrink after menopause

That said, it’s not all challenges – there are some welcome physical changes too. Perhaps the most obvious upside: no more periods! After decades of monthly menstruation, many women relish the freedom from tampons, pads, and menstrual cramps. As one woman cheerfully noted, the “top of the plus list of menopause is utter freedom to wear white skirts, shorts, or pants without worrying about an accidental bleed-through,” and she loves that she can travel without having to pack feminine products.5 There’s also peace of mind in not needing birth control pills or worrying about surprise pregnancies anymore.6 Even certain medical issues improve; for example, hormone-dependent uterine fibroids often shrink after menopause7, and many women are glad to say goodbye to monthly PMS symptoms. In short, your body is adjusting to a new normal – but with that adjustment comes relief from some of the hassles of the reproductive years.

As you navigate life after menopause, a few expert-backed tips can help you thrive:

  • Stay active: Aim for regular exercise, including aerobic activities and strength training, to keep your heart strong, bones dense, and mood lifted.16 Consistency is more important than intensity – even moderate exercise a few times a week has big benefits.
  • Eat for your bones and heart: Include calcium and vitamin D in your diet for bone health17, and focus on balanced meals with plenty of veggies, fruits, and whole grains. Limit excess sugar and unhealthy fats. Good nutrition will help manage weight and protect your heart.
  • Don’t smoke: If you do smoke, now is a great time to quit. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease and also can intensify hot flashes, so giving it up will benefit you in many ways.22 Keep alcohol in moderation too, as excessive drinking can affect your bone and heart health.
  • Get your check-ups: Stay on top of health screenings like bone density tests (DEXA scans), mammograms, colonoscopies, and blood pressure or cholesterol checks.23 Regular screenings can catch potential issues early and give you peace of mind about your health.
  • Address bothersome symptoms: Talk to your healthcare provider about any menopausal symptoms that are disrupting your life. There are treatments and remedies available – from lifestyle changes and herbal supplements to non-hormonal medications or hormone therapy. Effective treatments for relief of menopause symptoms exist, so you don’t need to “just live with it” if something is negatively affecting your quality of life.24
  • Stay connected and have fun: Nurture your social life and engage in activities that bring you joy and purpose. Spending time with friends and family, pursuing hobbies, volunteering, or traveling can all boost your mood and sense of fulfillment. The postmenopausal years are the perfect time to do more of what makes you happy.
