DHEA - the multi-talent
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is truly a multi-talent. This steroid hormone is sometimes referred to as the "fountain of youth," and not without reason. This hormone has a variety of positive effects on the body and mind. Think of DHEA as a "raw material" from which your body can produce the important hormones estrogen and testosterone as needed.
But what can DHEA really do?
- Strengthen the immune system: Like a shield, DHEA wards off diseases and strengthens your defenses. This is especially important for autoimmune diseases, in which the immune system attacks the body itself.1
- Lift the mood: Do you often feel stressed and depressed? DHEA can brighten your mood and alleviate depressive symptoms.2
- Increases energy: Like an energy booster, DHEA provides more vitality and prevents fatigue and exhaustion. It increases vitality. DHEA production also declines during menopause. This can lead to various complaints such as fatigue, depressive moods and an increased susceptibility to infections.
- Boost metabolism: DHEA helps you burn fat and build muscle. This allows you to better maintain your weight and shape your figure.3
- Protect the heart: The hormone can improve cholesterol levels by lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol, which can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.4
- Anti-aging effects: DHEA production decreases with age. DHEA can help slow down this process and mitigate age-related changes.5 Whether DHEA supplementation has an anti-aging effect has not been scientifically proven.
Important note: Although DHEA is a natural hormone, it is important that you talk to your doctor before taking DHEA supplements, especially if you have pre-existing conditions or are taking other medications.
Further areas of DHEA application currently being researched:
- Depression: DHEA could be effective in the treatment of depression, especially in people with low DHEA levels.6
- Osteoporosis: The study situation on the effects of DHEA on bone density is still inconsistent. Further research is needed.6
- Vaginal atrophy: Initial studies suggest that DHEA could improve vaginal dryness in postmenopausal women.6
DHEA is, therefore, a real all-rounder that supports you during menopause and beyond!
